This fish is named the bull ray because of the shape of its head, and it is sometimes called the duckbill ray in South Africa〔 for its long, flat, round snout. Bull rays are often and sometimes up to in length from snout to tip of tail,〔 in width and weighing up to . Females are larger and heavier than males. It has a tail spine averaging in length in females and in males.〔
